Have A Tasty Affair With These 4 Nutritious Dishes From Down South


If we screamed “Who’s up for some lip smacking gooey, cheesy pizzas?”,  you’d probably run to us, and breathlessly grab a slice (or two, or three).

If we screamed “Healthy food guys, come and get your share!”, you’d probably ignore us, or run the other way.

We all prefer indulging in the food we love, and panic at the sound of healthy eating. I mean, boiled broccoli or lean meat without spices? “Eat it yourself”, right?.

But guess what? Nutritious food can be tasty too, trust us. You just need to look in the right places—like the South Of India, which we did.

1. Kerala’s Puttu And Kadala Curry

According to Kerala’s strict hospitality laws (that we totally made up), no one enters its borders and leaves without tasting its trademark dish—puttu and kadala curry.

Cylindrical blocks of steamed rice with bits of grated coconut. Kadala (chickpeas) tossed in coconut oil, onions, tomatoes, curry leaves and Indian spices. Heaven on earth, or more precisely, in God’s own country.

The kadala curry is spicy, and the Puttu sobers down the spiciness: the blend is a tasty dish you’ll love, and crave more of. Oh, you like meat? Kerala has you covered: puttu can be accompanied by chicken curry instead of the kadala curry.

As far as nutrition is concerned, the puttu is literally steamed rice, which is high in carbohydrates. The kadala (or chickpeas) curry is a good source of protein, fibers and carbohydrates.

2. Tamil Nadu’s Uttapam 

If a nice crispy dosa is the poster boy of Tamil Nadu cuisine, uttapam is its nutritious doppelganger.

Very similar to the dosa, the uttapam’s batter is made using urad dal and rice powder. After it has fermented well, it is poured over a skillet and shallow fried on low heat.

Unlike dosas, uttapams need little to no oil. They are soft and steamed like idlis, and not crispy like dosas. They are also much thicker than dosas.  Also, they come with a host of toppings like tomatoes, onions and green chillies, which makes this a tasty and healthy dish.

Uttapams are a good choice if you’re on the lookout for something nutritious. All you need to do is tear a piece, dip it in some spicy chilly or tomato chutney, and say hello to your new addiction.

3. Karnataka’s Bisi Bele Bath

As fancy as it sounds. And healthy too.

Chock full of nutritious ingredients like rice, dal, vegetables and the right amount of spices like asafoetida and nutmeg, bisi bele bath also includes tamarind pulp. This gives this dish a tangy twist.  The end result? A savoury breakfast dish you’re sure to fall in love with.

Bisi bele bath is best when eaten hot and fresh.

4. Andhra Pradesh’s Kanda Bachali Kura

Spinach made Popeye strong, so how do you get stronger? You eat kanda bachali kura.

And why? Because this dish doesn’t just have spinach, it has yam as well. The latter adds to its nutritious benefits. You can eat this mouth-watering dish with rotis, or even as a side dish with rice.

Instead of yam, you can use eggplant or brinjal as well. This dish is on the spicier side (300-style: This is Andhra!), what with the addition of spices like clove, cardamom and pepper.

The high iron content in the spinach is great for your blood. Since this dish is made with a generous amount of spices, you’ll have an army of antioxidants in your defense.
